HELP!! Book Research

  • Jul. 2nd, 2009 at 10:24 PM
Cover
Okay, so for my 2010 book, I am creating a character VERRRRA different from who I am. So I need help getting in the right mindset!

I want her to be snarky, cynical, and yet still sympathetic. She's the loveable outcast!

I need some examples of movies or TV shows with characters like this.

So far I'm thinking:

Veronica Mars
Molly Ringwald (is it 16 candles or Pretty in Pink I want to check out? I confess I have seen only clips and can't remember which one she's the outcast type.... )
Juno
10 things I hate about you

(THANKS GUYS FOR THE JUNO/10 things suggestions! PERFECT!)

Any other ideas??

That would be Pretty in Pink (see icon :) ).

If you haven't seen it already, I would suggest 10 Things I Hate About You. Also, a viewing of My So-Called Life wouldn't go awry.

Movie Idea for Snarky/Sympathetic Character
What about the movie Juno?

I Forgot!
I totally agree with 10 Things I Hate About You and want to add Some Kind of Wonderful. I think Mary Stuart Masterson's character might fit the bill.

outcast molly ringwald is Pretty in Pink. Love Veronica Mars!
Have you seen Election? I'm not sure exactly the personality you're going for but Reese Witherspoon is hysterical as the super ambitious high schooler outcast in this.

the artsy friend in Mean Girls is certainly a snarky outcast, but she might be a little over the top!

I have to add my vote for My So-Called Life.

It's not that Angela is so snarky ... it's that the show itself has such wonderful writing.

If I think of any other likely candidates, I'll come back. :)

Pull out The Breakfast Club and check out both Molly Ringwald and Ally Sheedy (Molly all the way through, Ally at times). And I hate to say it (because I don't really care for her), but consider watching some episodes of Kathy Griffith's "My Life on the D List". Snarky? Check. Quirky outcast type? Check. You end up rooting for her anyhow? *sigh* Check.

I'd second the SOME KIND OF WONDERFUL -- Mary Stuart Masterson's Watts is wonderfully snarky yet poignant and wistful.

I second Paris from Gilmore Girls (love that show). There's also Dani from ABC Family's Wildfire.

- My So Called Life (I have the DVDs. Do you need this before July 25th?)

- I second [info]sbennettwealer on Heathers. Mmm somehow Christian Slater as a psycho was hot...

- And I also second [info]chicklitteens on Gilmore Girls (the character of Paris).

Also added to the list..
Jessica Lynn Darling in Sloppy Firsts by Megan McCafferty. She's not exactly an outcast. Um she sits w/the popular girls but HATES them. She is snarky, cynical and sarcastic.

Thinking old-school...Darlene Connor on the TV show "Roseanne" was very snarky and cynical. Not incredibly sympathetic, though. :>)

The newly-teenaged Kristina (Alexis's daughter) on "General Hospital" has been a bit snarky, and is supposed to be very intelligent, too.

i thought about the female characters from buffy, including buffy herself, like someone already mentioned.

the dark visions trilogy by l.j. smith has a main character who is an outcast. or daughters of darkness/huntress/witchlight also have a few female outcasts that are interesting.

Some Kind of Wonderful
Check out this lesser known John Hughes movie. When he did Pretty in Pink, the original ending had her ending up with Ducky. It got such bad feedback that he switched it. He still wanted to write that "underdog wins" story, so he switched the genders, changed it up a little bit. Voila--my favorite John Hughes movie.

Re: Some Kind of Wonderful
I never knew that! That makes me so happy, because she *should* have picked Duckie (even though I love Andrew McCarthy). But at least he gets pre-Buffy Kristy Swanson at the end. That's not a bad consolation prize.

Selena Gomez is really sarcastic/cynical in Wizards of Waverly Place....and Princess Protection Program, which is out on DVD. (:

my favorite "snarky, cynical outcast" has always been JOEY POTTER from DAWSON'S CREEK.

Well, I love, like, all the "outcast" characters in the movie The Breakfast Club. haha. Snark abounds in that movie. :D

Also love the "freaks" (esp. the heroine Lindsey) in the TV series Freaks and Geeks. That one is chock-full of great characterization, including witty banter, snarkiness, etc.

For wonderful dialogue, I second Norah from Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist--she is fantastic. And I also second Ghost World.

I just finished reading PRADA! It was soooo cute! I wrote a bit review on my blog, and I snapped a picture of it on the shelf in the YA section if you want to check it out :-) I know you were collecting those when it first showed up in stores.

We've been watching Californication, and while it's totally not the age group your going for, the MC is VERY likable and also very cynical. I think he's likable b/c 1. he has a code of ethics he sticks by - ie. he's a womanizer, but he isn't a cheater 2. he has honorable things he holds dear - ie. his daughter and his daughter's mother.

It's full of gratuitous nudity and profanity (never know who that offends), but it's a fun show with great characters.

As I was reading, my first thought was Veronica Mars - definitely fits the description! Also, Samaire Armstrong's character (Anna Stern) on The O.C. might help. And, Chuck would be a perfect fit, just imagined as a female (I guess).
